CAM Mash Up: This Week (Nov 12 - Nov 18, 2017)

Posted by Andrea Drennen, CMCA on November 12, 2017

The brain is the name of the game this week in community association management, as we get great advice to treat our brains the same way we treat our bodies, and an opportunity to learn how to 3x our memory. Can't forget to be there!  Politics came into the industry this week with a warning flag that the newly proposed tax changes could affect community associations. Read on, as these and much more are in this week's CAM Mashup!

As an educated member of the Community Association Management industry, you already know how crucial it is to stay informed and up-to-date on the latest news, trends and happenings within the industry. Each week, we bring together our favorite reads of the week and share them with you! Enjoy the CAM Mash Up and please share it too!

My Brain is a Temple

We all actively work on taking care of our bodies (or plan to, at least!) But when was the last time you worked on your brain? "It’s 2017. We are in a knowledge economy. Our jobs require us to execute at peak mental performance. When an athlete is injured they sit on the bench and recover. Let’s get rid of the idea that somehow the brain is different." Here are all the things you might do differently if you treated your brain like your body.

Tax Man Cometh

The new mortgage deduction changes in the GOP tax proposal directly affect the real estate market and may indirectly affect community associations if homes become devalued as a result. Learn about the potential ramifications, particularly if you live in California, DC or another high value market.

Going to the Dogs

"While single-family homes, condominiums, apartments, and townhouses are being more welcoming to pets, some residents don’t want their space to go to the dogs. Some people have allergies and phobias to four-legged friends, yet they have to share elevator and hallway space. That’s why it’s important to create and enforce fair HOA rules regarding pet policy. Here are a few suggestions from IKO Community Management"

Alternative Collection Actions

The ultimate option the community association has to collect on delinquent assessments is the lien. However, the lien is like the nuclear 'football' that follows the president. It can and should be considered only as a last resort, and with extreme prejudice by the board. There are other actions you can take to attempt to collect before you resort to selling someone's home out from under them."

Embezzlers Beware

"Theft is something community associations hope to never encounter, but a volunteer organization like an HOA can often be a soft target for fraud. Here are the common warning signs of embezzlement and the ways to protect your HOA from fraud." Thanks to Wise Property Solutions for this important advice!

I Remember!

We started this week's article with the brain and it makes sense to end there, too! This week, TOPS announced the featured  keynote speaker for CAMfire 2018. Ron White is a brain athlete with an incredible memory. You may have seen him on T.V. He is a two-time USA Memory champion who has made appearances on shows like Stan Lee's Super Humans, Martha Stewart Show, and Good Morning America. Not only will this guy impress the heck out of you, he will teach you how to remember names, easily recall facts and figures, and generally increse your memory three-fold!
