Posted by Brianna Sturm on July 5, 2015

Hope you had a fabulous Fourth of July! This week may have reserved the biggest fireworks for Saturday night, but we still have plenty to talk about! In the spirit of the holiday we have help for your next flag policy draft. We also have ideas to show your community volunteers how great they are, salvation from homeowners with pitchforks and a shocking statistic on home buying. We round it our with a great new freebie and some inspiration to make life at the office a lot easier. It all happened this week in Community Association Management!

As an educated member of the Community Association Management industry, you already know how crucial it is to stay informed and up-to-date on the latest news, trends and happenings within the industry. Each week, we bring together our favorite reads of the week and share them with you! Enjoy the CAM Mash Up and please share it too!

Know Your Flag

Flag issues are constantly causing homeowners associations to show up in the news, usually in a negative light. Perhaps it's time to review your flag policies. Before you begin, be sure you know the US Flag Code and proper use of the American Flag.

To Do's on Steroids

What can help you achieve faster meetings, easier budgets, contract negotiating power and defense against procrastination? An Action Item Report! The action item report is more than just a to-do list.” Check out some of the hidden benefits (and get a free download) of an action item report here!

Saying Thanks

Do your meetings tend to end with the words, "Thanks again, everybody!" Is that the only way you show your appreciation for community volunteers? The fact is that volunteers like to feel needed and appreciated. Here are some great ideas to help you show your appreciation.

Homeowners Don’t Hate You

Sometimes in Community Association Management, it just feels like homeowners are against you - pitchforks in hand. But most of them really don't hate you. In fact, only about 5% of homeowners are dissatisfied with the services the community provides.

Take It Easy On the Millennials

“Millennials are often blamed for the drop in home buying, but Generation X isn't jumping on the homeowner bandwagon either. The U.S. homeownership rate has been falling since 2005, and Gen-Xers are a big part of the decline. Homeownership among those aged 35-54 has dropped the most of any other age group since 1993, according to Harvard's State of the Nation's Housing 2015 report -- especially those under age 44.”

Play Nice

How do you treat your coworkers? Would you say you are generally nice to them? Do you ask them how their day is going or about their families? According this article, “Rudeness and bad behavior have all grown over the last decades, particularly at work...insensitive interactions have a way of whittling away at people’s health, performance and souls.” Start paying attention to your daily interactions with your coworkers just to make sure you are helping to create a positive work environment.

Company Culture

Here at TOPS Software, we take company culture incredibly seriously. As the Chief Morale Officer here at TOPS, I understand the importance of creating an environment employees are excited about working in. Check out this list from Hubspot of companies with noteworthy company culture! Hopefully it inspires you to put more focus on the culture that you are creating.
