This week's CAM Mashup covers what you'll need to know if the government shuts down again (for real this time!), how to bite harassment in the bud in the workplace, the importance of the customer experience, and much more. All of that, and more, in this week's CAM Mashup!

As an educated member of the Community Association Management industry, you already know how crucial it is to stay informed and up-to-date on the latest news, trends and happenings within the industry. Each week, we bring together our favorite reads of the week and share them with you! Enjoy the CAM Mash Up and please share it too!

Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself

"You serve on your homeowners’ association’s board of directors. You work hard, preparing for and attending meetings and listening to the homeowners that elected you.  And you do all this on your own time.

Despite your best efforts, your HOA Board may be putting itself in legal jeopardy. Specifically, do you and your board know and understand what is required for annual disclosures?"

Don't be That Guy (or Girl)

"Somewhere between teasing and assault lies the unpleasant but headline-grabbing realm of sexual harassment. Though complicated by the breadth of subtleties—or lack thereof—in personal interactions, changes in societal norms, and personal differences, harassing or discriminating against a person because of that person’s sex was banned by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Act applies to all employers with more than 15 employees, but state laws will apply to smaller entities and also other types of harassment, so there is not a permissible employment setting for inappropriate behavior."

We're at a turning point in our society where individuals finally feel able to successfully address behavior they aren't comfortable with in the workplace, so how do you go about preventing it from happening in the first place?

(Please Don't) Shut It Down!

"The big news this week was the gridlock in the Senate leading to a government shutdown. For now the shutdown has officially been lifted and the vote pushed for another three weeks until Feb. 8, 2018 but that means that come Feb. 8, we could enter another shutdown if a budget still isn't agreed upon.

Regardless of which side of the aisle you fall on, your management company needs to be able to keep up business as usual. How can a future government shutdown affect your management company?"

It's About the Journey, Not Just the Destination

"Why is the customer experience so important to invest in these days?

Well, with the amount of competition in every industry and time becoming more and more valuable, the focus is no longer around a quick sell – it’s all about creating a strong base for customer retention. Think about customer retention as if it were a vehicle: if you want to keep it running for longer, you stick to filling it with premium fuel. An excellent customer experience is the premium fuel for keeping customers loyal, and improving your overall business."

A Bespoke Suit Always Fits

"When hiring a new management company, there’s a typical process that most boards follow. They research, they invite companies for interviews, they check references, and then they make their final choice. Now comes, arguably, the most important part of the process: tailoring the management contract to meet a board’s specific needs."

TOPS Support Improvements

"As previously announced, TOPS Software's support services is making a number of changes in 2018 to better serve you. As a part of these changes, we are implementing an impact-based response system that will allow us to respond faster to clients with higher needs. Under our new SLA, clients experiencing issues that directly affect their ability to do business will receive a faster response time than clients with less imperative requests."
