I once read a quote that said something along the lines of “Those who don’t make mistakes are those who don’t do anything” (If we do learn from our mistakes, then I can say that I'm an expert in my field!)
Seriously, I believe that mistakes can be a blessing, a teacher, a motivator. If everything we attempted was always easy, how would we know true success?
I overheard a conversation one day where one of my staff members was speaking to a new employee on her first day of work:
Giving his words of wisdom, our accounting manager was giving a speech about how the software we use is constantly updated, and periodically, he will open the screen and there will have appeared a “new button.” He went on to say that he is hesitant of ever pushing that button until he is certain that he knows what effect this will have. However, he said that when I see the button, I always have to push it and see what happens.
After thinking a while on this conversation, I realize that we are all creatures of habit with a built-in comfort zone. Most people are uncomfortable with the unknown, the uncertainty that comes with any change in our lives. I have come to believe that without change, we become prisoners to ourselves.
When you let yourself dive into an unknown, eyes wide open to new possibilities, you start to realize that anything is possible.
I am by no means saying that things will always work out, but how will you know unless you try?
So when you see the next new button in your life - don't be afraid of it! Instead, think of the possibilities, and push the button!
