Happy New Year to all! As we kick off a new year in the CAM Mash-Up, I hope you will indulge me in a little bit of self reflection. When we first started the Mash-Up in 2014, it was in response to the incredible difficulty we ourselves were having finding positive, helpful news and articles on the Internet that focused on the community association management industry. The Mash-up gave us a place to publish those great articles so our readers could find them in one easy place.
In the years since then, our little industry has grown quite an online presence! Today, we have the opposite problem with the Mash-Up, wading through hundreds of articles each week to find the few that we think will really contribute something new and useful to our readers. In fact, we get approached constantly by authors asking us to promote their article in the Mash-Up.
To all of our readers, I want to say huge thank you for coming back week after week and continuing to view the Mash-up as your source for CAM industry news. You're the best!!
Now on with the Mash-Up and everything that matters this week in Community Association Management!
As an educated member of the Community Association Management industry, you already know how crucial it is to stay informed and up-to-date on the latest news, trends and happenings within the industry. Each week, we bring together our favorite reads of the week and share them with you! Enjoy the CAM Mash Up and please share it too!
Your New Resolution
If there's one thing I would recommend that you add to your New Years Resolution list, it's adding the Comm-Unity Conversations podcast to your weekly routine. Tonoa Poirier is an experienced CAM Professional who always has great tioe to make managing community associations easier, smoother, and more effective. Check out this episode on Practicing Real-world Positivity to see what I mean!
New Tax Code
With the beginning of the year comes the beginning of Year-End and tax time, probably more hated for CAM professionals than budget season, and that's saying a lot! This year has an added layer of complication with a new tax code passed by Congress at the very end of 2017. A lot of people are talking about what this new code means to individuals, but did you know it affect taxes for community associations too? James Ernst, CPA outlined for us exactly how the new tax code affects common interest community associations, and what your options are.
What Mattered Still Matters
A new year doesn't mean we get to forget all about the things that were important in 2017 and build a whole new list for 2018 (unfortunatel, in some cases!) In fact, the issues that dominated the year of 2017 will probably also dominate the conversation in 2018. Let's look with Better Condo Life at the big predictions they made for 2017 and see what's still on our collective radar.
Some board meetings are barely a blip on the average resident's radar, and go by without a hitch. But we've all experienced at least one meeting that went the other way. Angry homeowners fighting for their opportunity to be heard, and general chaos all around. Need a tip for how to cut through the noise? I loved this one: "...McAdams drew close enough to a microphone that his voice penetrated the din. Wearing a kindly and serene expression, he uttered a simple, sincere statement that brought remarkable and immediate quiet: “This is your meeting. If you want to yell and shout, you are welcome to do that all night long. I will listen as long as you want.”" Here are some helpful tips on how to save a meeting that's gotten tense.
Make the Switch!
Is your board tired of having to do EVERYTHING? Do you have trouble with legal and compliance issues? Is good financial reporting a pain in the neck? If so, you might be one of thousands of community association boards that are ready to make the switch to professional management. Read about it here.
