CAM Mash Up: This Week (Dec 8-12, 2014)

Posted by Brianna Sturm on December 14, 2014

Priority liens, drinking games, Myth Busters and Unsung Heroes. It's this week in Community Association Management!

As an educated member of the Community Association Management industry, you already know how crucial it is to stay informed and up-to-date on the latest news, trends and happenings within the industry. Each week, we bring together our favorite reads of the week and share them with you! Enjoy the CAM Mash Up and feel free to share it too!

Move to the front of the line

Priority liens are a big topic these days, with banks dragging their feet to pay out the monies owed to associations under the law. So it was a major affirmation for community associations recently when an HOA won in the Nevada supreme court on a priority lien case. This will serve as precedent not only for Nevada, but for all 22 states and the District of Columbia with priority lien statutes.

The Enemy of My Enemy...

Many homeowners take an adversarial approach to their property manager, but in fact, the manager is their first line of defense. When someone seems upset with you, here's a great article to send to them: Why Property Managers are not the Enemy: A Value Proposition.

Board Meeting Drinking Games

"After a long day at work, it's sometimes nice to sit down with a lovely glass of red wine or a cocktail. However, at the risk of sounding like an old fuddy duddy, I have to say that alcohol and HOA board meetings are just not a good mix..."

Amsterdam or Bust

We often talk about the value that a homeowners association brings to the neighborhood by increasing property values and maintaining a beautiful, functioning community; but we don't often get to point out so vividly the contrast. So it was refreshing this month when Dutch Minister Stef Blok announced that membership and minimum regular dues payments will be mandatory in homeowners associations throughout The Netherlands to combat the degredation of housing in the country.

Empower Your Business

If you're trying to grow your management company (and who isn't?) it may be time to take a good strong look at your business and your portfolio to define your management company and incorporate smart growth strategies to improve. Check out this slide share from the popular session given by Jeff Hardy and Craig Huntington at the CAMfire Conference earlier this year.

Myth Busters

The cloud is on the tip of everyone's tongue and yet there are still so many misconceptions. It's too expensive, it's not secure, it's only for big business... Trapp Online comes to the rescue by debunking 5 myths about the cloud.

Conflict Resolution

Many board disputes do not require intervention on the part of the CAM Manager, but when they do, it helps to have a strong understanding of what you can do, and how to do it. Julie Adamen gives us the answers in this article on managing board conflict.

Unsung Heroes

Volunteers are the heart of every association, but to keep them engaged and fulfilled, you need to show them how much what they do matters to the community. One organization has found an interesting way to do it, with a red carpet awards ceremony. What a great idea!
