Battles! Brawls! Throw-downs! Kerfuffles! Competition is human nature, and the CAM industry is, too. From it's the fairly innocuous association voting, to knowing when to finish the fight for a bid, to the new legal conundrums facing Florida's coastal communities. Big or little, dangerous or expected, competition is everywhere. This week's CAM Mashup has a few different examples and ways you can handle any quarrel that comes your way!

As an educated member of the Community Association Management industry, you already know how crucial it is to stay informed and up-to-date on the latest news, trends and happenings within the industry. Each week, we bring together our favorite reads of the week and share them with you! Enjoy the CAM Mash Up and please share it too!

Choose Your Champion (Online)

"Electronic voting is a game changer.  In a society that lives on computers and mobile devices on the run nowadays, it is a perfect solution for associations who are permitted either by their state law or their bylaws to use.  States like Florida have a lot of large community associations where quorums are challenging and was confronted with complaints of fraudulent election practices, so it passed an electronic voting statute which is one of the most stringent in the country."

War on the Waterfront

"More often than not, when a homeowner incurs a violation fine and refuses to pay, the only real options are to keep adding to the fines hoping they eventually buckle and pay up, or put a lien on the property.

From one end of the spectrum to the other with no in between and no alternatives is a struggle for both sides--something beachfront properties in Florida are going to find out first-hand starting July 1, 2018."

Pick Your Battles

"“If you’re only looking for the lowest price, we are probably not the right choice for you.”

Without trying to sound arrogant or elitist, I have made this statement many times to prospective customers. While we may indeed end up having a lower price depending on who is the current provider and the other companies submitting bids, that is not our focus. We don’t want to win your business on price and be a vendor. We want to be your HOA partner."

Snuffing Out Snafus

"One of the worst habits of Condo Boards is the desire to bicker and debate issues which the Board is wholly unqualified to answer.  Nothing is more eye roll-inducing from Board meeting attendees than hearing people who have no idea about a technical subject – say, concrete – debate for a half hour.  This is not efficient or productive. This is the age of the internet, and there are numerous ways to solve problems in a Condo Association by leveraging the expertise of others.  If you want to be productive and efficient, here are some Condo Association problem solving strategies to improve your meetings."

Outsmarting the Competition

"As developers at the top end of the residential market know all too well, amenities can often make the difference in courting the small demographic that can afford the most extravagant residences.

The result is an arms race among building owners to provide truly unique services and offerings — in this day and age that translates to the liberal use of technology."
