This week in Community Association Management

Scandals, fortune tellers, squatters, resumes, repairs, heat illness and giant, tree-sucking holes in the ground. What do all of these things have in common? It's this week in Community Association Management

As an educated member of the Community Association Management industry, you already know how crucial it is to stay informed and up-to-date on the latest news, trends and happenings within the industry. Each week, we bring together our favorite reads of the week and share them with you! Enjoy the CAM Mash Up and feel free to share it too!

As much as I would love to deny it, I can’t help but enjoy hearing about a juicy scandal.  Unfortunately, I think this is true for most people. That is why, for your guilty pleasure, we here at TOPS bring you, “In the Media: Scandals affecting community associations
in 2013.” Enjoy!

Crystal Ball

For me, the New Year is always an exciting time. It marks a time to set new goals for myself, plan adventures and daydream about all of the possibilities the New Year may bring. So, are you wondering what experts are predicting for the Property Management industry in 2014? Well, my friend, you’ve come to the right place!

How many zeros was that?

When a condominium owner in Ottawa requested a repair estimate for her building, she never imagined that estimate would be in the millions…. $15.3 million to be exact! Now, condo owners could face charges ranging from $40,000-66,000!

Heat Illness

Hey, California associations! Are you in compliance with the heat illness law? You may want to take a look over the California Labor Code section 226.7 just to be safe. Give those men and women a much-needed break and avoid having to pay the penalty!

Update Your CV

We know you are happy in your current job, but when was the last time you updated your resume? This month in the HOA Manager Newsline, Julie Adamen gives some great tips on how to get your resume updated, including answers to specific situations, such as what to say if you've been canned, and what to emphasize for the biggest impact.

Expert Squatters

The squatters described in this next story have taken the illegal act to the next level. They were able to change the locks on numerous homes and successfully rent out 27 foreclosed properties out to unsuspecting tenants. In a 9 month period, they collected around $240,000 in rent and deposits. Wow!

Sinkholes (aka hellholes)

Well, after watching a couple of these videos, I may have a couple sleepless nights in my future. There is nothing scarier than the thought of the earth swallowing you and your house, whole! Check out some of these sinkholes (Dunedin, Tampa, and Louisiana) that had a mighty appetite! Two of them were literally just down the street from our Clearwater office here at TOPS! (Yikes)

(Watch the first 40 seconds, your hair will stand on end!)
