3 Ways to Show Your Worth to Homeowners Before Year End

Property managers: Take the time to show you value to homeowners and board members

The image of the management company in the eyes of community members can be less than accurate at times – we all know that. Don’t let homeowners gather an impression of your services and efforts merely from statements, letters, and hearsay. This can be a great time of year to proactively turn around opinions and impressions.

Always enter the community with both you and your car being sharp in appearance. Some view this as an indicator of your professionalism and your ability to pay attention to detail.

Have a Physical Presence in the Community

This is the time of year in which many homeowners will be enjoying the outdoors in the cooling weather - working on projects around the home before friends and family visit for the holidays and putting up decorations for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and then of course Christmas. (Believe it or not, that time of year is closing fast!) Take advantage of this time to show yourself in action and prove your worth.

As a professional whose purpose is to ensure that the matters of their community are well met, there is no reason to hide behind the wheel of your car when you are handling your duties around the community. The average homeowner doesn't know their management company and/or manager. Use this to your advantage to help change any short-sighted opinions community members may have.
  

Display a Professional Image

Always enter the community with both you and your car being sharp in appearance. Some view this as an indicator of your professionalism and your ability to pay attention to detail. Company shirts and signage on your car bearing your company logo are a nice touch. Magnetic signs for the car are relatively inexpensive and you can then take them off when your day is done.

Be personable and engaging with people you see in the community while you are there, rather than avoiding them. Let them know who you are and the importance of your role if they don’t know you. You never know when someone has some insight to share and can inform you of something that will help you.

Getting your name out in multiple ways is going to increase your visibility and reduce the number of people who say they never see the management company or manager.

Be Helpful to Homeowners

I also urge you to be creative in thinking of other ways to get your name and worthiness in the view of homeowners. Consider providing tips or information that may be useful to homeowners in the communities you serve. 

For example, everyone’s region is in contending with ‘winterizing’. (I live in Florida, so one of the delightful things we have to consider is hurricane preparedness.) Maybe its personally leaving hurricane guides at each door with a note that it was delivered compliments of you. Or maybe include some important pieces of information such as the closest shelter in the next newsletter you send to the homeowners. Maybe it’s a tip on winterizing a boat or for common projects which are taken on this time of year in your area.

Personal touches like these can be fondly remembered by the homeowners and there is nothing wrong in reminding the board about these proactive gestures either. They certainly can’t hurt your chances in sharpening your image to your associations and maybe it will even bring you good tidings for the holiday season.
